County Police, Hiring and Duties

The Jasper County Sheriff's Police Department is comprised of Merit Officers. Merit Officers, are appointed by the Sheriff, and the Sheriff's Merit Board, after review of their backgrounds, written testing, interviews, and medical history. They are on probationary status for one year, and may be removed for any cause during that year. During this first year, they must attend and graduate from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. They must also complete all field-training programs, and in-service training required by the department.

After completing this probationary period, they are considered Merit Officers and are full time paid employees of the County Police. They may not be removed by whim of the Sheriff, County Officials, etc., nor after a change in administration for political reasons.

Promotion of Merit Officers is permanent as well after a one year probationary period.

Due cause must be established for removal, and that removal is subject to hearings and judicial review if deemed necessary.

Thus the County Policeman is not a tool of any Political Organization, and Officers can hold their heads high while providing Police Service to the communities in which we live.

The County Police organization is a vital member of your community, providing service in the areas of:

Accident Investigation and Reconstruction, Traffic Safety and Enforcement,

Criminal Case Investigations, Civil Process Service,

Security of the Courts, Emergency Planning,

Drug Eradication Programs, Education in our Schools, through The D.A.R.E. program,

Neighborhood Safety, Our Community Policing Program,

Family Crisis issues, such as:

Enforcement of Court Orders involving, Visitation, Restraining and Protective Orders, Emergency Mental Commitments, Domestic Disturbances, etc.

Whatever the case at hand presents; the County Police Officer should have answers for you, and / or recourses for you to explore.
