Reserve Deputies

Reserve Deputies are appointed by the Sheriff of the County and are granted powers assigned by the Sheriff. Generally they have full arrest powers, while acting in an "on duty" status. They are a volunteer organization, and as such receive no pay for their work performed. They routinely work at the County Fair, ball games, and other such extra curricular activities. They are to aid the Officers of the County Police Department when called upon, and they are to respond for service when requested by the Sheriff of the County.

Their training consists of the state mandated Law Enforcement Academy Pre-Basic classes, and other in-service classes. They participate in on the job training, in the Jail, Communications Center, and Civil Process, as a requirement for service. Firearm qualifications are also a portion of the training. They are certified after all of these criteria are met, to work, two to a car on the road, and to handle minor calls. They refer all investigative matters to the full-time County Police Officers.

If persons wish to be considered for service as a Reserve Deputy, they need to contact Sgt. David Schaetzel of the Jasper County Police, who will in return forward that information to the Reserve Division and it's president. Applications are taken and reviewed during their monthly meetings.

Monthly meetings are mandatory and are held at either the Jasper County Jail in Rensselaer, or at the Sheriff's Annex southeast of DeMotte.
